Two Yellow-Bellied Marmots Mysteriously Appear in San Francisco Bay Area

other · 2026-09-15

In the San Francisco Bay Area, two yellow-bellied marmots were discovered at lower elevations. The initial sighting occurred on September 5 in the Mission District of San Francisco, leading to notifications to San Francisco Animal Care and Control. Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue successfully captured this marmot. Subsequently, another marmot was located in Antioch, approximately 45 miles to the northeast, and was also taken to the rescue center. While both marmots are safe, they appear disoriented. Lila Travis, the founder of Yggdrasil, mentioned that these animals typically live in colonies. The rescue team suspects they may have traveled from Tahoe or nearby mountainous areas. Efforts are underway to trace their origins for a proper return. Motorists are urged to secure their vehicles to avoid similar situations.
