Two Upper East Side Apartments Merged into One Cohesive Home

A professional couple combined their 1,700-square-foot apartment at 1000 Park Avenue with an adjacent 800-square-foot unit, plus a public hall and service corridor, to create a 2,800-square-foot home. The renovation, completed last year, was led by architect Kevin Lichten of Lichten Architects and interior designer Michelle Gerson of Michelle Gerson Interiors. The project addressed the original cramped, dark kitchen by expanding it and adding a dining space. A new kitchen window facing a courtyard increases natural light. Custom cabinetry includes vertical reeded glass and brass, walnut, and white lacquer micro-shaker pieces. Venetian plaster by DecorFin accents the stovetop and sink walls. The former breakfast nook was replaced with a more inviting version. The dining room features an eight-foot monolith table with a zig-zag base by Aaronson Woodwork, a Phillip Jeffries wall covering in "Blossom in Taupe," Milo Baughman 1188 dining chairs, and a sculptural mirror. The living room includes Patrick Naggar's "Curve Sofa" (2017, in partnership with Ralph Pucci International) and two Michelle Gerson Hamptons Chairs upholstered in "Beloved" by Carlucci di Chivasso. The entry has a dusty blue-gray landscape mural by MJ Atelier and checkerboard Carrara marble floors with black "Noir Moon" marble. Bedrooms and bathrooms were also renovated. Lichten stated, "The two apartments now read as one gracious and graceful home."
