ttal's off-grid solar lighting installation transforms Frankfurt riverfront

The Munich-based firm ttal, headed by Tobias Trübenbacher and Andreas Lang, has introduced 'Main Light,' a solar lighting installation that operates independently along the Main riverfront in Frankfurt, Germany. This initiative is part of the World Design Capital 2026 program and utilizes translucent organic photovoltaic (OPV) solar foils to produce renewable energy on-site, negating the need for underground electrical systems. The lightweight, modular designs employ reversible concrete foundations that serve as urban furniture, without requiring wiring or permanent digging. Featuring full cut-off technology and demand-based controls, the installation emits warm-spectrum light to minimize ecological impact. During daylight, colored OPV panels create dynamic shadows and filtered light, while at night, it provides low-impact lighting that ensures public accessibility and environmental care. The project was developed in partnership with ewo GmbH, ASCA GmbH & Co. KG, Schake GmbH, and merz kley partner GmbH. The inaugural pilot installation turns a part of Frankfurt’s riverfront into a testing site for self-sufficient public infrastructure.
