Trump Builds Helicopter Pad at White House, Altering Its Appearance

US President Donald Trump is having a helicopter landing pad constructed on the White House grounds, marking another alteration to the official residence's appearance. The 80-year-old president led journalists on a tour of the construction site on the South Side, explaining that new helicopters cannot currently land on the lawn due to their powerful engines, which would tear up and fling grass during landing. As a result, older models have been in service. Trump stated that the US helicopter manufacturer is financing the landing pad, which will have a granite surface. Media reports had previously indicated that plans for the pad had existed for years, and the acquisition of new helicopters raised the question of a dedicated landing area. Reports also noted that the new helicopters' design poses a fire risk to the lawn due to downward-directed hot air. US presidents typically board helicopters on the South Side's lawn. Since the start of his second term in early 2025, Trump has made several changes to the White House's appearance, including demolishing the East Wing and planning a controversial large ballroom. The Oval Office has been lavishly decorated with gold. Trump remarked that the White House was in a terrible condition, also mentioning ongoing restoration work on the facade. He praised his own building abilities, while critics accuse him of vanity.
