Triennale Milano Celebrates Vignellis' Design Legacy in Major Retrospective

The Triennale Milano is hosting a major retrospective on the influential designer duo Lella and Massimo Vignelli, titled 'Lella and Massimo Vignelli. A Language of Clarity', running until September 6, 2026. Curated by Francesca Picchi with Marco Sammicheli and Studio Mut, this is the first exhibition of such breadth since the 1980s. The show highlights their impact on graphic design, product design, and visual communication, from their work for the Piccolo Teatro in Milan to their iconic New York subway map. Lella Vignelli, born in Udine in 1934, studied at MIT and IUAV, while Massimo Vignelli, from Milan, focused on design. They founded the Office of Design and Architecture in 1960, and later co-founded Unimark International in 1965, with Massimo as design director in New York. The exhibition features their coordinated corporate identity for Knoll, packaging for Bloomingdale's, and a reconstruction of the TG2 television studio set for RAI in Milan. It also showcases Massimo's critique of typographic proliferation, advocating for a limited set of fonts including Bodoni, Century, Garamond, and Helvetica. The Vignellis' design philosophy emphasized clarity, essentiality, and functionality, leaving a lasting mark on contemporary visual culture.
