Tracey Rose's 2000 Artpace Drawings on View at Ruby City Through 2027
Ruby City in San Antonio, Texas, in collaboration with the Linda Pace Foundation, is presenting a series of 62 drawings by South African artist Tracey Rose, created during her 2000 residency at Artpace. The works on paper, executed in ink and graphite on Artpace stationery, resist narrative and resolution, functioning instead as a field of marks that test the limits of representation. Rose, who emerged in the mid-1990s as a critical voice in post-apartheid art, refused the demand for legibility imposed by global curatorial systems. The drawings are not preparatory sketches but a self-contained project born from a daily compulsion to make images. Rose has described them as predictions, attempts to create a code to control outcomes, a belief stemming from an earlier experience during her undergraduate years when a drawing seemed to anticipate a violent event. The exhibition, titled "Tracey Rose," is on view through May 2027. The drawings are part of the Linda Pace Foundation Collection and were commissioned for this show. Adilson De Oliveira, a Johannesburg-born artist and writer, contributed an essay on the works for ART AFRICA magazine.
