Torkwase Dyson Debuts First Austrian Solo Show at Kunsthaus Bregenz
Torkwase Dyson's first solo exhibition in Austria has opened at Kunsthaus Bregenz, running until 24 January 2027. The American artist's show treats architecture as a contested rather than neutral ground, probing how slavery, colonialism and capitalism have shaped the environments people inhabit. Newly commissioned for the museum, the works span monumental sculpture, painting, stop-motion animation and sound, turning the building's interior into an immersive study of movement, boundaries and belonging. Two vast black sculptural forms that Dyson terms hypershapes occupy the ground floor, disrupting the open interior; they derive from her theory of Black Compositional Thought, which considers how Black communities have historically conceived and built spaces of autonomy. A darkened gallery elsewhere layers animation, sound and paintings, while large-scale abstract compositions point to waterways and infrastructures moulded by colonial histories. The pieces extend Dyson's continuing inquiry into the ties between bodies, built environments and systems of power, and ask who holds the freedom to occupy, shape and move through space. The exhibition frames geography as anything but neutral, presenting architecture as a physical structure and simultaneously as a space contested by history, identity and human possibility.
