Tony Bechara's First Museum Survey Opens at Parrish Art Museum

Right now, the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York, has an exhibit called "Tony Bechara: An Artist of Many Worlds." It honors the artist who sadly passed away on April 23, 2025, which was also his 83rd birthday. The show features 84 works spanning over 60 years, including a landscape from 1968, pixelated abstracts, shaped canvases, sculptures, notebooks, and color charts. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1942, Bechara spent his mornings creating detailed acrylics using a quarter-inch grid. He was also actively involved with cultural organizations, like El Museo del Barrio, where he served as board chairman and championed artists such as Carmen Herrera. Their foundations are merging since Herrera named him her sole heir. His first solo show was in winter 2024 at Lisson Gallery, with works priced between $20,000 and $150,000. The Parrish exhibit, curated by Monica Ramírez-Montagut, opened after his death. Bechara also supported various institutions, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
