Tomasz Sobecki's Photography Career Spans Gothic Cathedrals to Global Landscapes

Tomasz Sobecki, born in 1952 in Toruń, is a Polish photographer whose work intertwines artistic exploration, cultural history, and intellectual thought. After a severe climbing accident in 1980 shifted his focus from mathematics, physics, and mountaineering to photography, he began to investigate themes such as architecture and sacred spaces. His prominent series include Prayer in the Gothic Cathedral, Gothic – Shape and Light, and The Idea of the Pyramids, utilizing cameras like the Mamiya RZ67 and Pentacon Six. He completed his doctorate in 2013 at the Polish National Film, Television, and Theatre School in Łódź, focusing on The Idea of the Pyramids. Sobecki has taught at universities across Poland and served as a visiting professor in India. His work is featured in several museums, and he has upcoming publications, including Crucifix (2024) and Gothic Sacrum (2026). Influences on his art include Władysław Hasior and Francis Bacon, and his exhibitions have been held in various international locations.
