Tião's Intimate Archive of Rio's Morro da Providência at MAR

exhibition · 2026-06-02

The Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) presents 'Tião: Um Fotógrafo da Providência', an exhibition of over 270 photographs by Sebastião Pires de Oliveira (1943–2015), known as Tião. Taken between the 1960s and 1980s, many images are shown publicly for the first time. Tião worked on commission for residents of Morro da Providência, one of Rio's oldest favelas, documenting family portraits, neighborhood celebrations, carnival, and the changing port area. The exhibition extends to the Providência cable car station, reconnecting the archive to its community. On view until 29 November 2026.
