Tianyu Wang's Photography Explores Shamanism, Patriarchy and Digital Identity

Tianyu Wang, born in 1997, is currently participating in the Silence Awareness Existence residency at Arteles Creative Center in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, where she aims to develop new works that delve into nature and Sámi shamanism. Nominated by Erik Kessels for BJP's Ones to Watch 2025 list, her artistic practice merges her upbringing in Shandong, China, steeped in Taoist traditions, with modern digital culture. Wang's project "Hiding and Seeking," initiated during her MA in photography at ECAL in Lausanne, critiques patriarchal violence through manipulated black-and-white images of her body. Additionally, her series "Settled into the mountain for eternity" explores spirituality through documentary and portrait photography. Wang, who spent five years at Jiazazhi Press, now divides her time between Lausanne and Paris, pursuing photography and book editing opportunities.
