Three Versailles Exhibitions Spotlight Overlooked Italian Painter Leonardo Cremonini

Three simultaneous exhibitions in Versailles, France, are dedicated to the 20th-century Italian painter Leonardo Cremonini (1925–2010), a relatively overlooked figure. The main retrospective, "Leonardo Cremonini. Le Regard en miroir," runs from May 27 to October 4 at the Espace Richaud, featuring over 80 paintings selected by art historians Lydia Harambourg and Tancrède Hertzog. A companion exhibition at the Musée Lambinet (May 27–September 20) places Cremonini's works in dialogue with historical masters, including a confrontation between his "La Femme au chat" (1954) and Gustave Boulanger's "Portrait de Madame Lambinet" (1887). A third exhibition at the Carré de la Farine (September 28–October 11) will highlight Cremonini's influence on contemporary artists such as Susanne Hay and Didier Paquignon. The Espace Richaud's neoclassical architecture complements Cremonini's perspectival and color experiments, with works spanning from the 1950s (reminiscent of Piero della Francesca) to the 1980s–2000s. Key themes include distorted bodies referencing Picasso and Bacon, beach scenes with existential ennui, and the use of mirrors, windows, and partitions to disrupt perspective. Notable works include "Les Sens et les Choses" (1968), "Articulations et désarticulations" (1959), and "La Torture," which references the Algerian War.
