Three New Exhibitions Open at Hastings Contemporary

Hastings Contemporary on the East Sussex seafront has opened three exhibitions running until 13 September 2026. In the main floor galleries, Brazilian artist Janaina Tschäpe presents "Conversations with the Sea," featuring large-scale semi-abstract paintings created after a stormy visit to Hastings in winter 2025, alongside a video work "Blood, Sea" (2004) documenting Blackpool. Argentinian-born Miguel Rothschild's "Undercurrents" is his first solo show in a major UK gallery, with the central installation "From the Depths of the Sea" (2026) using a suspended photographic image on fishing lines anchored by sinker weights. Upstairs, "Moore / Freud" is the first exhibition examining how Henry Moore and Lucien Freud drew inspiration from family, including Moore's wartime Shelter Drawings and Freud's portraits of his children Bella, Esther and Ali. The gallery is headed by former Royal Academy director of exhibitions Kathleen Soriano. Hastings also offers a vibrant independent music scene, dining at Maggie's, Rock a Nore, Bayte, Dora's, The Royal, St Clement's Restaurant and La Bella Vista, plus cafes Goat Ledge and Starsky and Hatch. Accommodation includes The Old Rectory and St Benedict's BnB.
