Three Museums Reassess Max Slevogt's Illustrations for Bruno Cassirer
An initiative involving the Landesmuseum Mainz, Saarlandmuseum Saarbrücken, and Liebermann-Villa am Wannsee has led to the creation of three exhibitions that explore the partnership between Impressionist artist Max Slevogt (1868–1932) and publisher Bruno Cassirer (1872–1941). Curated by Karoline Feulner, Eva Wolf, and Viktoria Bernadette Krieger, these exhibitions trace Slevogt's journey from his first illustrated book for Cassirer, "Ali Baba und die vierzig Räuber," published in 1903, to "Faust II" (1927). By utilizing newly available archival resources, including Slevogt's written and graphic estates, the exhibitions emphasize his graphic contributions and significance within the Berlin Secession. A collaborative catalog presents the research findings, while Slevogt's estate continues to facilitate studies at the Max Slevogt Forschungszentrum in Mainz.
