Threading Inwards: Spirituality in Textiles Across Asia

The Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile (CHAT) in Hong Kong is hosting the group exhibition 'Threading Inwards' from 21 March to 28 June 2026, featuring 14 Asian artists who delve into the relationship between textiles and spirituality. Korean artist Han Sang A produces soft sculptures using meok (Korean ink) and cotton, echoing Buddhist themes and ink paintings. In her 2026 project 'Soul Bottles,' Hu Yinping showcases knitted and crocheted vessels crafted by Chinese women, symbolizing the transformation of everyday items into spiritual artifacts. Kim Sajik captures rare bashofu kimonos from Okinawa, highlighting a nearly extinct weaving technique. Milay Mavaliw, a Puyuma artist from Taiwan, interprets indigenous geometric designs in 'Totems of the 16 Indigenous Peoples (Imprints)' (2013–19) and creates a curtain piece titled 'The Scent of Flowers' (2013–19). Citra Sasmita's embroidery 'Sky River in Fountain of Amygdala' (2026) reinterprets funerary traditions through a life-cycle motif inspired by Bedawang Nala's myth. IV Chan's 'Chloronest' (2026) offers an immersive textile sculpture that blends green room and CGI aesthetics. Additionally, Aziza Kadyri employs AI to create traditional Uzbek dances related to silk production. The exhibition will continue until 28 June 2026.
