Thomas Zipp, Berlin Artist Known for Dark Parallel Worlds, Dies Unexpectedly

Thomas Zipp, an artist and professor from Berlin, passed away unexpectedly on Good Friday due to an aneurysm hemorrhage. His death comes shortly after Dean Kissick's essay in Harper's Magazine, which announced the conclusion of politically charged art. Over a 35-year career, Zipp created immersive installations that combined painting, sculpture, and performance, frequently referencing psychiatric hospital settings. His prominent work, "Vergleichende Untersuchung zur Verteilung der Kreisbreite," was showcased at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Born in 1966 in Heppenheim, Hesse, he studied at Städelschule and the Slade School of Fine Art. He taught at institutions in Karlsruhe, Vienna, and Berlin's Universität der Künste, guiding artists like Mary-Audrey Ramirez, despite limited solo exhibitions in major institutions.
