Thomas Billhardt's Independent Gaze: Retrospective at Fotografiska Berlin

Fotografiska Berlin presents 'Die Augen weit offen' (Eyes Wide Open), a retrospective of East German reportage photographer Thomas Billhardt, who died in January 2025. The exhibition focuses on his work from 1959 to 1972, including iconic images from Vietnam and portraits of political figures. Billhardt, who studied at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) from 1959 to 1963, began his training under his mother, a renowned portrait photographer in Chemnitz. His diploma thesis marked the start of his lifelong engagement with Berlin's Alexanderplatz. Despite his proximity to the GDR regime, Billhardt maintained an independent perspective, as evidenced by his photographs of ordinary people and war victims. The exhibition challenges the label of 'propaganda photographer' that followed him after 1989. Billhardt's career included a pivotal moment two days after the Berlin Wall was built, when he was allowed to leave the GDR to photograph in Cuba. He resisted the temptation to defect in Canada and returned to East Germany, gaining credibility without belonging to any ideology or party. His photographs of DDR party leaders were often confiscated, but a snapshot of Angela Davis bending for a 'brotherly kiss' with Hermann Axen became famous. In the 1980s, he was employed by a party-affiliated publisher, receiving a company car and top salary, yet he resisted the Stasi's advances. The exhibition underscores his unvarnished, independent gaze.
