The Tragic Fates of Marie Antoinette's Four Children

Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI presided over France until their executions during the French Revolution. Among their four offspring, only Marie-Thérèse Charlotte (1778–1851) lived to adulthood. After enduring imprisonment and exile, she wed Louis Antoine d'Artois in 1799, assuming the title of Duchess of Angoulême. Following the Bourbon Restoration, she was named Dauphine in 1824 but faced exile again after the July Revolution of 1830. She succumbed to pneumonia near Vienna in 1851. Their son Louis Joseph (1781–1789) passed away from tuberculosis at the age of seven, just prior to the storming of the Bastille. Louis Charles (1785–1795), known later as Louis XVII, died in prison at ten, while Sophie Hélène Béatrice (1786–1787) did not survive infancy.
