The Box in the Barn: A Wooden Volume Inserted into a Historic Barn in Mexico

A new architectural intervention in Mexico inserts a lightweight wooden volume inside an existing barn without altering its original structure. The project, featured in Glocal Design Magazine's 89th edition 'Visionarias del espacio,' balances heritage preservation with contemporary design. The independent volume is clad in black asphalt and features birch plywood interiors with black-dyed MDF for the kitchen, bath, and storage block. A visual axis runs from the threshing area through the barn to an ancient apple orchard and open landscape, aligned with a panoramic window and dining table. The structure uses a KVH timber frame with breathable construction and underfloor heating for year-round use as a seasonal retreat. The barn itself acts as a natural climate buffer. The project is framed as a strategy of architectural sustainability through reuse, maintaining the original place's value while adding a contemporary layer.
