Tbilisi Demolishes Fuksas-Designed Rike Tubes, Sparking Outcry

In August 2023, the demolition of the Rike Park Music Theatre and Exhibition Hall, commonly referred to as Rike Tubes, commenced in Tbilisi, Georgia, with an anticipated completion date in December. The structure, designed by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, was originally envisioned in 2010 during the presidency of Mikheil Saakashvili, but construction was halted in 2012 after the Georgian Dream party took power. A demolition permit was granted in June by the Tbilisi City Architecture Service to the property owner, Rike Dom. Both Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Mayor Kakha Kaladze have voiced criticism regarding the building. The Fuksas studio expressed disappointment over not being consulted. The demolition has sparked responses from both architects and local residents, with some contemplating legal action. Future developments may include a hotel by Rike Dom.
