Tate Modern to Dyson HQ: Eight Power Stations Reborn as Cultural and Commercial Hubs

architecture-design · 2026-10-17

Opened in 2000, Herzog & de Meuron's Tate Modern, which was once the Bankside Power Station in London, led the way in repurposing decommissioned power facilities into art spaces. Battersea Power Station, originally designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, underwent a transformation by WilkinsonEyre in 2022, becoming a mixed-use development. In Brooklyn, a 115-year-old power plant was renovated into Powerhouse Arts by Herzog & de Meuron. W Architects and Studio Lapis adapted Singapore's St James Power Station, built in 1926, for Dyson's headquarters. In Philadelphia, the Delaware Power Station was turned into Ballers sports club by Good City Studio and Hexagon Studio Architects. ARCity Office revamped a 1980s plant in Shenzhen into Shajing Village Hall, while John McAslan + Partners modernized Oxford's first electrical power plant for the Saïd Business School. Atelier van Berlo transformed the Philips power plant in Eindhoven into an innovation hub.
