Tarsila do Amaral Centenary Exhibition Opens at Palácio Boa Vista

On the occasion of what would have been Tarsila do Amaral's 140th birthday on September 1st, the Palácio Boa Vista in Campos do Jordão, São Paulo, presents the exhibition 'Tarsila do Amaral e a Volta ao Clássico'. Curated by Renata Rocco and Raquel Ruiz, the show features 16 works from the Acervo Artístico-Cultural dos Palácios do Governo, spanning five decades of the artist's career. Highlights include 'Operários' (1933) and 'Religião Brasileira' (1927), which illustrate her evolution through cubism, surrealism, and the social concerns of the 1930s. The exhibition's title derives from a 1939 chronicle by Tarsila, exploring her engagement with tradition within modernism. Tarsila's early life on coffee farms in the interior of São Paulo, including Fazenda São Bernardo in Capivari (now Rafard) and Fazenda Santa Teresa do Alto in Mont Serrat, deeply influenced her work. Her iconic 'Abaporu' (1928), given to Oswald de Andrade, inspired the 'Manifesto Antropófago' (1928), a cornerstone of Brazilian Modernism. The exhibition is free and open to the public until September 30th, with entry on a first-come, first-served basis.
