TARQ Studio Transforms Valledupar's Public Market into Spatial Experience

architecture-design · 2026-04-07

In Valledupar, Colombia, a new public market designed by TARQ Studio redefines the traditional market experience. The Plaza Luna Vallenata, completed in 2025, spans 3,057 m² and was commissioned by the Gobernación del Cesar. The project was curated by Valentina Díaz, with lead architects Eduardo Torrente, Andrés Pinzón, Nicolás Suárez, and Nathalia Crosby. Located on the city's periphery, where public space is scarce, the building aims to transform a routine necessity into a spatial experience. Photographs by Mónica Barreneche document the structure, which serves as both a square and a market. The design challenges the typical logic of buying, selling, and leaving, offering a new model for public infrastructure in underserved areas.
