Tarek Atoui to Unveil Largest Work Yet as Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern Turbine Hall
On 13 October, Tarek Atoui, a Lebanese sound artist, will unveil his Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall in London, which will be on display until 11 April. This marks Atoui's most extensive project and the first sound artist contribution to the series since Bruce Nauman's work in 2004. Having relocated from Beirut to France in 1998, he studied electroacoustic composition and led the STEIM centre in Amsterdam. His artistic approach, inspired by John Cage and free jazz, emphasizes active listening. Among his significant works are the 'Within' series and Organ Within (2022). Atoui also develops software for installations, blending digital elements with natural materials, while critiquing the digital public sphere as a 'sphere of growing noise' that creates alienation.
