Tao Kurihara Presents "My True Self" for Spring 2027 in Tokyo

other · 2026-10-22

Tao Kurihara titled her Spring 2027 collection MY TRUE SELF, a meditation on purity and freedom expressed largely through white. The show took place in the morning at the Comme des Garçons headquarters in Aoyama, Tokyo, continuing her tradition of early presentations in the building's lower levels. The collection opened with broderie anglaise layers and doily-like constructions, including lace-heavy coats and dresses that evoked curtains and tablecloths, then shifted into gray tailoring before returning to white. The finale featured dense floral detailing and Liberty-style prints applied to cotton capris and ruffled skirts. Models wore cloud-like hair adorned with straw and foliage, and garments carried botanical embroidery made in collaboration with artist Hitomi Mori, whose work Kurihara's team later reproduced at scale by printing it onto dresses and T-shirts. Music composed, as usual, by Kurihara's husband mixed harps, birdsong and piano. Speaking in the CDG press room, where the house's seasonal exhibition of its brands was installed, Kurihara said she set aside her concerns to make something she purely wanted to create, comparing the mindset to a child drawing without seeking praise. She added that she felt she had distilled everything down to what she genuinely wanted to make. The collection avoided nostalgia, balancing creativity with commerciality, a principle Rei Kawakubo has long instilled in her protégés.
