Tang Chang Private Museum Opens in Bangkok with Comprehensive Survey

A new family-run private museum dedicated to the late Thai poet-painter Tang Chang has opened west of Bangkok, housing nearly his entire oeuvre of around 8,000 works. The inaugural exhibition, 'Poet Tang Chang's Institute of Modern Art', spans his career from early charcoal portraits and ink drawings to calligraphic abstractions and experimental figurative works. Highlights include the iconic painting '14 October' (1973), which responds to the military crackdown on a popular uprising, and over 400 self-portraits. The show also features archival materials such as a satirical 1972 cartoon from Thairath newspaper and a TV documentary. Chang, a Bangkok-born child of Chinese immigrants with no formal training, never left Thailand and was never named a National Artist. The exhibition aims to situate him within his Thai milieu, countering recent international scholarship that has focused on his abstract works and positioned him as an outsider. The museum is open through 30 April 2027.
