Takero Shimazaki Architects Turns Hackney Wick's Yard Theatre Into Permanent Venue

architecture-design · 2026-10-21

A crane tower now rises above The Yard Theatre in Hackney Wick, London, as a beacon-like element of a revamp and extension by Takero Shimazaki Architects. The studio worked with reclaimed materials on the project, which converts a venue that began in 2011 as a converted warehouse into a permanent performance space. Practice Architecture designed that original incarnation, conceived to stand for only three months. The redesign adds a bar, backstage facilities and community space to the theatre's programme. Drawings released with the project document ground, first and second floor plans, roof plans and multiple sections, alongside photographs of the completed building. The scheme marks the transition of the East London theatre from an interim, makeshift structure into a fixed cultural building with expanded audience and production amenities.
