Tacita Dean Films Bruce Nauman Drawing Blind in New Marian Goodman Projection

exhibition · 2026-10-17

Bruce Nauman has returned to drawing after a hiatus of nearly twenty years, and Tacita Dean captured the process on camera. Their sessions in New Mexico produced Drawing Blind Drawing, a two-part film projected across more than seven metres at Marian Goodman in Paris. Nauman told Dean at their first meeting that one cannot make a mistake when drawing with closed eyes; he was then working on a new body of silverpoint and goldpoint drawings and had begun filming himself drawing, often blind. Dean, who stays behind the camera and prefers to observe other artists, saw her own attraction to the unpredictable in these works. For a shared still life the pair brought together a plaster cast of Goethe's hand and a Nauman bronze in which thumb and fingers form a heart. Dean shot in 35 mm and adapted her matte system, borrowed from Abel Gance's Napoléon, to suggest that both men draw simultaneously. Only their hands appear. One draws with eyes shut while the other guides him, then the roles reverse and the gestures merge. The double projection splits along a diagonal, hands reappear at several scales, and four sequences interlock over roughly four minutes. A selection of Dean's 16 mm films screens daily at 4pm in the gallery's basement until 14 November. The exhibition runs from 19 October to 19 December 2026 at 79 rue du Temple, 75003, open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-6pm, free entry.
