T.ark Architects completes Laugarás Lagoon geothermal spa in Iceland

T.ark Architects, an Icelandic firm, has finalized the Laugarás Lagoon, a geothermal spa spanning 3,000 square meters located in Laugarás, approximately 90 minutes east of Reykjavik. This two-story wellness facility boasts a grass-covered roof adorned with expansive parabolic arches, drawing inspiration from ancient cave structures in the area. Constructed from glue-laminated timber, the roof is likened to a "grass tent." The spa features two geothermal pools connected by a small waterfall, along with a restaurant and wellness amenities. Collaborating with interior designer Anthony Bacigalupo, the restaurant showcases pink travertine and clay-plaster walls crafted from local red gravel. The entrance opens to a spacious reception and dining area, while the upper pool offers picturesque views of the river, bridge, and mountains, and the lower pool is more private, surrounded by trees and rugged stone walls. Each pool includes swim-up bars and a cold plunge, with two dry saunas situated in cubic structures to the east. A sizable basement accommodates the plant and service areas. Locally sourced wood and turf were used in construction, while textile artist Sigmundur FP designed textiles, and Nordic Angan created scents for the lagoon's soaps using local flora.
