Sweden Acquires US Himars Rocket Artillery for $730 Million

Sweden's government announced on Monday a $730 million (7 billion kronor) deal to purchase US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (Himars) from Lockheed Martin. The acquisition, which includes approximately 10 launcher trucks and a large quantity of ammunition, aims to enhance the Swedish Armed Forces' long-range strike capabilities. Defence Minister Pal Jonson confirmed the details to reporters, with first deliveries expected in 2027. The government emphasized the need for rapidly available capabilities that complement existing conventional systems like the Swedish-made Archer artillery, citing the current security situation. Additionally, Sweden and Finland issued a joint declaration to deepen cooperation on rocket artillery systems. This move reflects heightened defense concerns in the region following Russia's actions.
