Swapna Namboodiri Discusses Plastic Art and Aquarium of Tomorrow
Swapna Namboodiri, a self-taught artist originally from southern India, has resided in Adelaide for almost three years after spending nine years in Doha. Transitioning from her initial career as a software engineer in India, she now creates vibrant artworks from discarded plastics, drawing inspiration from marine life. In partnership with Bank Australia, she developed the Aquarium of Tomorrow, an installation crafted from thousands of plastic pieces to highlight the future of marine species in the face of increasing ocean plastic. The materials used were collected from the community and included everyday plastic items. Bank Australia has transitioned to making its cards from 100% recycled plastic, with 64% derived from coastal areas. Namboodiri is also involved in the South Australian Living Artists Festival and is working on a project for Paper on Skin in Tasmania.
