Swaline Mkhonto and Zovuyo Pendu Explore Memory and Identity in 'Site Forming' at Bag Factory

The exhibition titled 'Site Forming: Where Encounter Takes Form' is currently showcased at Bag Factory Artists' Studios in Newtown, Johannesburg, featuring works by Swaline Mkhonto and Zovuyo Pendu. This display will be available until 6 November 2026 and arises from the artists' involvement in the 2025/2026 Young Womxn Studio Bursary Award. Mkhonto explores themes of fragmentation, memory, and the relationship between the body and space through printmaking, installation, writing, and mark-making. Pendu's figurative artworks delve into the psychological dynamics of faith, ego, and the unconscious, reflecting on how personal experiences shape identity. Curated by Penina Chalumbira, with contributions from Letsema collective members Ntabiseng Mofokeng, Mbako Moemise, and Eva Rose London, the initiative is supported by Sam Nhlengethwa, Bag Factory Artists' Studios, and the National Arts Council, emphasizing the bursary's goal to cultivate emerging womxn artists and encourage innovation within Johannesburg's contemporary art landscape.
