SVA Panel Revisits Brad Holland's Early New York Years and Influence

exhibition · 2026-09-24

On September 17, a panel at the School of Visual Arts focused on the exhibition Brad Holland: Making It Personal, which was curated by Jonathan Twingley. Among the speakers were Stephanie Plunket, chief curator at the Norman Rockwell Museum, and Terry Brown, the director emeritus of the Society of Illustrators. Plunket recounted her initial encounter with Holland in 1967, following an advertisement she placed in The Village Voice. Holland, showcasing a substantial portfolio, soon landed a column with Playboy. His artistic repertoire spanned various styles, such as underground comics and caricature. In response to the 1971 Attica State Prison riot, he created a drawing that appeared in The New York Ace, marking a significant point in his stylistic development, which included his debut cover for Time magazine.
