Supersystème Makes Typography the Core of Visual Identity

Montreal-based design studio Supersystème, founded by Eveline Lupien and Marie-France Gaudet, creates visual identities, publications, and posters where typography functions as both language and image. The studio's work for cultural clients—such as Festival des Faubourgs, Offta Arts Festival, and Centre CLARK—uses scale, direction, and juxtaposition to make type a central component of the message. Lupien describes their approach as exploring "how can typography operate simultaneously as language and image?" The studio's name reflects an interest in systems as flexible frameworks, not rigid structures. Working within constraints of artist-run centres and grant-funded initiatives, they build frameworks that allow content to circulate clearly. Their process involves extensive research and iterative collaboration, described as a "ping-pong game" where files are shared and built upon.
