Superflex and KWY.studio unveil Super Kello, a fish-friendly sculpture for Oulu's Climate Clock trail

architecture-design · 2026-07-05

Danish artist collective Superflex and KWY.studio have created Super Kello, a harbourside stone sculpture in Oulu, Finland, designed for both human and fish enjoyment after sea levels rise. The work is part of the Climate Clock public art trail, curated by Alice Sharp of Invisible Dust, as part of Oulu's 2026 European Capital of Culture programme. Super Kello is the latest in Superflex and KWY.studio's 'fish cube' series, parametrically designed to maximize surface area from waste marble. The Rosa Aurora marble from Portugal was chosen for its pink color, mimicking coral polyps that may arrive as oceans warm. The sculpture includes a broadcast of Homer's Odyssey read at one word per hour over ten years. Superflex collaborated with behavioural ecologist Alex Jordan to understand fish perspectives. The trail features seven international artists paired with scientists, including Rana Begum with glaciologist Alun Hubbard, Takahiro Iwasaki with snow hydrologist Pertti Ala-aho, Ranti Bam with physical geographer Jan Hjort, Antti Laitinen with mycologist Jouko Rikkinen, Gabriel Kuri with climate scientist Kevin Anderson, and Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen with multiple advisors. The artworks are built to withstand sub-Arctic conditions.
