Stylus Architects buries Green Lodge under Putney Heath

Stylus Architects has completed Green Lodge, a 175 m² house in Roehampton, London, that is largely buried underground. The client, a long-time contractor, gave the simple instruction: 'Do what you want, but it has to be fast.' Facing a constrained and ecologically sensitive site on the edge of Putney Heath, the architects chose to insert the building into the ground rather than impose it above. This strategy maintains a modest exterior presence while creating a spacious family home below the surface. The project was completed in 2025 and photographed by James Retief. Materials were supplied by Maxlight, with Caelix Works and Cast London Joinery serving as general contractor. Team lead Matt Withers oversaw the design.
