Studio Method's traveling repair cart rethinks design for local communities

Studio Method, led by designers Riel Bessai and Pedro Daniel Pantaleone, launched 'Arrotino del Design' during Milan Design Week 2026, a mobile repair cart that challenges conventional design week spectacle. Developed through Nieuwe Instituut's CIVICITY residency in Quartiere Adriano, a peripheral Milan neighborhood, the project draws from the Italian tradition of the traveling repairman (arrotino). Instead of proposing grand solutions, the duo focused on existing community care systems, introducing 'micro-briefs'—small, localized requests from residents. The cart, attached to a hacked Lime scooter, functions as a workshop, meeting point, and repair station, traveling through Milan. Practical interventions included rebuilding broken folding tables for a local elderly center, transforming damaged tiles into structural elements, and converting a broken pipe into a planter. The project resists the 'saviour reflex' in design culture, emphasizing trust and reciprocity—one resident offered lunch in exchange for help. After Design Week, the cart remains connected to the Magnete community center in Adriano, continuing as a neighborhood tool rather than a temporary installation.
