Studio Majnoona Embeds Lebanon's Devalued Coins into Collectible Furniture

Beirut-based design label Studio Majnoona has launched FRATA, its inaugural limited-edition collection that embeds devalued Lebanese currency into handcrafted furniture. The collection responds to Lebanon's socioeconomic crisis that began in 2019, when the Lebanese pound lost over 98% of its value. Lebanese 250 and 500 LBP coins, which disappeared from circulation as their metal value exceeded monetary worth, are arranged in checkerboard, gradient, and zigzag patterns on furniture surfaces. The collection comprises four pieces: two side tables, a table lamp, and an ottoman, combining repurposed coins with mirrored stainless steel, velvet upholstery, and American walnut. Each piece is named after the total face value of its embedded coins. Studio Majnoona was founded by Jana Sawaya and works with local artisans, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary methods. The name Majnoona means "crazy" in Arabic, reflecting the studio's focus on eccentricity and creative freedom.
