Studio Jumel and Ariane Ronot Turn 1930s French Cider Press Into LE PRESSOIR Stool

architecture-design · 2026-10-13

LE PRESSOIR, a sculptural stool crafted by Studio Jumel in collaboration with designer Ariane Ronot, utilizes a 1930s French cider press as its foundation. The stool's four legs are formed from the press's original wooden screw mechanism, preserving its aged texture and unique imperfections from years of use. A cross-shaped framework made from 3 mm-thick aluminum connects the wooden parts, contrasting the polished metal with the rustic timber. The open design evokes apple blossoms, while the helical seat mirrors the screw's geometry. This project celebrates Normandy's cider-making heritage, blending reclaimed wood with newly created aluminum elements that feature a brushed finish. Measuring 45 cm in height and 42 cm in both width and depth, LE PRESSOIR harmonizes functional seating with an artistic form. The design honors the object's agricultural history while reimagining it for modern furniture. Photography credits go to Wallys.M, and the project was submitted via designboom's DIY submissions, with editing by Christina Vergopoulou.
