Studio Blackburn Revamps Brompton's Brand with Factory-Floor Typography

architecture-design · 2026-08-07

Studio Blackburn has unveiled a new global brand platform for Brompton, the iconic British folding bicycle manufacturer. The project, which aims to support Brompton's expansion across Europe, the USA, and Asia, involved developing a scalable, digital-first identity system. Crucially, the studio preserved the existing Brompton logo and triptych symbol, focusing instead on extending the brand's infrastructure. A bespoke headline typeface, Brompton Slab, was created in collaboration with type designer Sam White to ensure legibility across global languages. To launch the typeface, the team visited Brompton's factory in Greenford, London, where they cut oversized metal letters and photographed them among the hand-built bikes, resulting in striking brand imagery. The brand phrase 'Life Unfolded' underpins the system, referencing the bike's folding mechanism and the sense of adventure it brings to urban commuting. Motion principles draw from the mechanical 'final flick' of the rear wheel, with smooth '3-speed' UI transitions and dynamic '12-speed' editorial layouts. Brompton Blue, an industrial hue inspired by the factory, serves as a visual anchor. The project demonstrates a thoughtful approach to brand evolution, respecting heritage while building for global growth.
