Stijn ter Braak: Trompe l'Oeil Reimagined in 'Mijn badkamer' at Galerie Mieke van Schaijk
In January 2022, Stijn ter Braak, a Groningen native born in 1995 and now residing in Antwerp, unveiled his installation titled 'Mijn badkamer' at Galerie Mieke van Schaijk in 's-Hertogenbosch. The piece, which measures 408x229x241 cm, was previously displayed at Lichtekooi Artspace, where Melanie Deboutte characterized his work as 'an attempt to unravel reality.' This installation features a cardboard façade and a carefully crafted shabby bathroom interior, utilizing trompe l'oeil techniques. A mirror within the piece reflects the surroundings but omits the viewer, reminiscent of René Magritte's 'La Reproduction Interdite.' Ter Braak, a KASK graduate from 2018, has also showcased 'Mijn slaapkamer' at 019 in Ghent, forming a trilogy of domestic environments, and he teaches at KASK.
