Steven Holl Architects to Revitalize Historic Ida Noyes Hall at University of Chicago

The University of Chicago has appointed Steven Holl Architects (SHA) to oversee the renovation of Ida Noyes Hall, a structure that dates back 111 years, located on the Midway Plaisance. Initially inaugurated in 1916 as a women's clubhouse, this building has taken on multiple functions, including a dining hall, movie theater, and campus bar. Funded by a generous $50 million donation from David M. Rubenstein, the chair of the university's board of trustees, the project aims to modernize the infrastructure, enhance accessibility, and create new spaces for programs and events, all while maintaining the building's historic character. The renovated site will keep the Ida Noyes name, with new additions referred to as the David M. Rubenstein Commons. Designed by Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge (now Shepley Bulfinch), the building showcases Tudor-style architecture with bay windows and a cloistered courtyard. SHA's portfolio includes similar projects at institutions like Pratt Institute, Princeton University, and the University of Pennsylvania. JLK Architects will focus on historic preservation, while Workshop Architects will handle student-life programming. Details about the design remain undisclosed, and the university has not clarified how much of the building will be closed during renovations, a point of concern for student organizations and campus media.
