Stephanie Mei Huang's video work 'yellow porcelain ii (outside the Los Angeles Police Academy)' is on view at DE SARTHE's New Media Room in Hong Kong from May 16 to June 27, 2026. The 5-minute 34-second silent video, part of the three-part 'self-armature' series (2019), shows the artist slowly wrapping their head with clay strips against barren sandstone formations. The performance, filmed at the Los Angeles Police Academy—a site built in the 1930s by public intoxication arrestees and emblematic of police power—culminates in the artist rubbing yellow ocher onto the clay, transforming their head into 'yellow porcelain.' This act critiques Orientalist stereotypes that reduce Asian women to fragile objects. The final frame shows a human-sized clay form left behind, evoking clay pigeons and themes of possibility.
