Stephanie Barba Mendoza channels Vienna Secession in Wilde aparthotel

London-based interior design studio Stephanie Barba Mendoza has designed the communal spaces of the Wilde aparthotel in Vienna, which occupies a 19th-century post office building in the Fleischmarkt district. The landmark post office was constructed in 1854 and operated for 150 years. Mendoza drew inspiration from Vienna's artistic history, particularly the Viennese Secession and Wiener Werkstätte movements, as well as the concept of the post office as a place of exchange. The lobby features tall vaulted ceilings, buttery yellow walls, a geometric mural, and intimate seating areas with tiger-print chairs and a brown velvet sofa. The restaurant, Rascal, includes a hand-painted red chequered line snaking around columns, a gold fretwork bar counter, and checkered blue banquettes bordered by short white curtains. The guest bathrooms combine chequerboard flooring, veiny marble skirting, and striped awnings. Guest bedrooms were designed in-house by Wilde, which also has locations in Portugal, the Netherlands, and the UK. Photography is by Julius Hirtzberger.
