Stelarc to Implant Internet-Connected Microphone in Forearm Ear, 50 Years After Bertolucci's Novecento
Since 2007, Australian artist Stelarc has had an ear stitched onto his left forearm and is set to have surgery to implant a microphone connected to the internet. This development aligns with el Hype's tribute to Bernardo Bertolucci's Novecento, featuring a scene where a farmhand amputates his ear. The author delves into the theme of severed ears throughout history and art, citing the Código de Hammurabi, Bartolomé de las Casas's 1552 writings, and fray Marcos de Niza's insights. Key historical moments include Julio León Fandiño cutting off Captain Robert Jenkins's ear in 1731, sparking the War of Jenkins' Ear, and Vincent van Gogh's ear self-mutilation in 1888. Additionally, in July 2024, Donald Trump was grazed by a bullet in Butler.
