Steel spiral staircase redefines century-old Shanghai house by Uchida Shanghai

Architect Mitsuhiro Shoji and Uchida Shanghai have successfully renovated a century-old residence located on Yu Yuan Road in Shanghai. Central to the design is a sculptural spiral staircase crafted from bent steel plate, which enhances circulation while allowing natural light and airflow. Previously, the original light garden had been enclosed to maximize floor space, resulting in a dim and poorly ventilated interior. The newly positioned staircase, beneath a revitalized opening, serves as both a circulation pathway and a key design feature, establishing a vertical void that links the various levels through light, air, and movement. The design thoughtfully integrates existing elements with a minimalist material palette of steel, bamboo, and concrete, emphasizing traditional materials and passive ventilation strategies. The 190 sqm home comprises a living room, a bedroom on the first floor, and a hobby room on the third floor. Photographer Eiichi Kano captured the images.
