Steel 'archipelago' table anchors Kiez Kebab in London's Notting Hill

Designer Annabel Colterjohn and architecture office Red Deer have completed Kiez Kebab, a restaurant on Golborne Road in west London that reimagines the Berlin kebab shop with an industrial yet warm aesthetic. The 30-cover, no-reservation space is centered on an organically shaped communal steel table described as an 'archipelago of steel,' accompanied by curving bar counters that challenge perceptions of stainless steel as cold. Materials including microcement, plaster, aluminium, and walnut wood evoke postwar Berlin's brutalist architecture and reflect the restaurant's focus on honest ingredients. A custom sound system by London-based Friendly Pressure and a metal counter doubling as a DJ booth nod to Berlin's music scene. Furniture by Berlin metalworker Alan Mueller of Tebton includes bar stools, cocktail tables, and lighting. Playful touches include mirrored toilet walls and photos of Angela Merkel enjoying kebabs. The restaurant, founded by four friends, aims to elevate kebab from late-night staple to high-quality dining, with a hatch for takeaway and an extended window shelf for pavement seating.
