Städel Museum and Liebieghaus Open Major Exhibition on Mary Magdalene
In Frankfurt, the Städel Museum, in partnership with the Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection, has launched an extensive exhibition titled “Mary Magdalene: Sin. Pray. Love.” This showcase, which will be available until January 17, features over 100 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from approximately 60 institutions across Europe and North America, emphasizing contributions from female artists. Spanning more than 10,000 square feet across two floors, the exhibit is divided into 10 thematic sections that explore representations of Mary Magdalene from the Middle Ages to today. Curated by Bastian Eclercy and Stefan Roller, the exhibition investigates the evolving image of Magdalene, who Eclercy describes as a “composite figure who’s half biblical, half fictional.” Notably, it includes “The Penitent Mary Magdalene” by Francesco Furini (1640-45). The Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection itself contains around 3,000 sculptures from ancient Egypt to the early 19th century.
