South Korea, Japan, US Proceed with Freedom Edge Drills Near Jeju Despite Trump Cuts

In light of recent budget reductions implemented by the Trump administration, South Korea, Japan, and the United States have announced their intention to move forward with the multi-domain Freedom Edge exercise near Jeju Island. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in Seoul characterized this annual defensive drill as a response to the nuclear and missile threats posed by North Korea, aimed at maintaining regional peace and stability. Initially conducted in June 2024 after an agreement reached at the Camp David summit in 2023, the exercise will encompass maritime missile defense, air and air-defense operations, anti-submarine warfare, and cyber defense, as reported by Yonhap news agency. North Korea has previously condemned the trilateral exercise as a "reckless show of strength," alleging that the US aims to encircle China and exert pressure on Russia. A spokesperson for the United States Pacific Command indicated that the exercise will bolster shared values, improve interoperability, and enhance defense partnerships to promote peace and stability across the Pacific. This announcement follows increased tensions, highlighted by North Korea's launch of approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles on August 20, as shown in footage broadcast in Seoul.
