Soundwalk Collective to Represent Holy See at 2026 Venice Biennale

Soundwalk Collective, comprising Stephan Crasneanscki and Simone Merli, will represent the Holy See at the 61st Venice Biennale, running from 9 May to 22 November 2026. Their pavilion is located at the Complesso di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice and the Giardino Mistico dei Carmelitani Scalzi in Venice. Rather than a conventional exhibition, they are creating a listening environment: a continuous sonic composition collectively authored by invited artists, shaped by the monastic garden's rhythms. A sculptural element gathers real-time environmental data—light, movement, electromagnetic activity, lunar and solar cycles—to modulate the sound installation, making the garden an active participant. The project is inspired by Hildegard of Bingen's understanding of sound as a form of knowledge. In an interview with ArtReview, Merli stated the work aligns with the Biennale theme 'In Minor Keys' by shifting attention to quieter, slower elements. The Holy See pavilion emphasizes coexistence and multiplicity over national identity.
